Ceramic Polishing is a technique used in the dental industry to create a smooth surface on the tooth. This process consists of four steps, with each step involving a different type of polishing material. For example, polishing materials for resin-ceramics, such as ceramic, are different from those used for porcelain or metal.
In the current study, ceramic polishing systems were compared with their surface roughness after clinically simulated resin clean-up. They were found to produce a similar surface roughness, despite the difference in the polishing materials used. The results, presented in Figure 1, are not conclusive. However, this study shows that polishing materials and methods can be used on the same surface.
Uses high-efficiency polishing
Several studies have shown that ceramic polishing materials are different. For example, lithium disilicate ceramics and leucite-reinforced feldspathic ceramics exhibit varying surface roughness after polishing. The latter type is a good candidate for single restorations because of its excellent mechanical and esthetic properties. It also makes an excellent veneering material for high-strength cores.
The process of Ceramic Polishing surfaces uses high-efficiency polishing fluids containing a tensio-active agent and a nano silica sol particle suspension. The pH value of the polishing fluid is typically between 3.0 and 9.0, with nano silica sol representing approximately 0.4-4.0 % of the total mass of the polishing fluid.
Ceramic polishing machines are mass-production finishing machines that require a high level of precision and process time. Workpieces are swept through a series of different grades of ceramic polishing media, and then subjected to a cleaning stage. This step removes paint and other impurities and leveles the underlying metal roughness.
comparable quality to glazed surfaces
Various types of ceramic polishing systems are available in the market today, but the two latest materials are Vita VM9 and e.max. In the current study, four intraoral Ceramic Polishing systems were tested using two types of ceramic. These systems are effective in producing surfaces of a comparable quality to glazed surfaces.
Advanced ceramics can provide advantages over other materials in terms of extreme hardness, wear resistance, and low density. A high degree of precision is required in the processing of these materials, so they require high machining efforts. They also require a defect-free surface. The polishing process requires the addition of sulfuric acid to bring the pH of the polishing fluid to a range between 4.0 and 2.0.
Smoother surface than other groups
The final result of Ceramic Polishing is a smooth, shiny surface that is able to prevent premature fracture. The final texture and smoothness of the surface depends on how well it is prepared. A rough surface makes it more prone to fracture and increases the risk of decay. A smooth surface may also prevent plaque from building up on the teeth and prevent the formation of cavities.
The results of the study revealed that the different porcelain polishing systems had different effects on the surface roughness. Porcelain surfaces polished using the Meisinger system had a smoother surface than porcelain surfaces polished by using silicon occlusal brushes. ANOVA results showed that the effects of these systems on the surface roughness were significant. Furthermore, a Tukey HSD test showed significant differences between the control and experimental groups. Group FS showed a significantly smoother surface than other groups. The researchers hypothesized that the process of ceramic polishing affects color stabilty.
